Sixth Edition Of ‘SL MICE Expo 2026’ | Sri Lanka Scores Big In Global MICE Tourism

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka has reinforced its ambitions to emerge as a leading international destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE), as the sixth edition of SL MICE Expo 2026 brought together international buyers, tourism professionals, media representatives and local industry stakeholders in a major initiative to expand the island nation’s global business tourism footprint.

Organised by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB), the multi-day event concluded after an intensive programme of business networking, destination promotion, professional discussions and cultural engagement, demonstrating Sri Lanka’s determination to convert its exceptional tourism assets into sustainable international business opportunities.

More than 120 hosted international MICE and travel operators, along with media representatives from 26 countries, participated in the Expo, while over 125 Sri Lankan MICE suppliers and service providers presented their products, facilities and expertise to international buyers.

Representing Pakistan as the country’s sole media representative, I had the privilege of attending this significant international tourism gathering and witnessing first-hand the concerted efforts being made to position Sri Lanka more prominently on the global MICE map.

The programme commenced on October 5 with a MICE Business Forum and welcome reception at Cinnamon Grand Colombo. Featuring a destination presentation and a high-level panel discussion, the forum examined Sri Lanka’s potential, competitive advantages and opportunities in the international MICE marketplace.

Speaking on the occasion Chairman Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, Mr. Dheera Hettiarachchi Said that Sri Lanka’s MICE industry was presented at the MICE Expo 2026 as a major driver of economic growth, supporting the national goal of attracting 5 million tourists and earning 10 billion USD by 2030.

He said MICE made up about 5% of tourist arrivals in 2024 and has risen to roughly 10 to 11% by mid-2026, which he credited to collaboration across government and industry. Growth has been backed by improved airports, highways, rail and connectivity, along with a visa free policy and strong institutional support from the Convention Bureau. Promotion efforts target India, which supplies about 25% of arrivals, through roadshows in cities like Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad, plus trade fairs and familiarization tours for China, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Sri Lanka will also attend the ITB MICE Asia Forum in Singapore for the first time and a global MICE conference in Russia in December. Training for students, travel agents and tour guides rounds out the strategy.

The official opening ceremony followed on October 6 at Shangri-La Colombo, alongside business-to-business (B2B) sessions connecting international hosted buyers directly with Sri Lankan suppliers.

The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Tourism and Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath. Deputy Tourism Minister Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha, Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Chairman Dheera Hettiarachchi and other distinguished guests and industry stakeholders also participated.

The B2B programme was designed to facilitate more than 10,000 business meetings, creating opportunities for local suppliers to engage with international buyers, develop commercial relationships and pursue future event bookings. This target reflected the scale of the organisers’ business ambitions, with the ultimate value of the initiative depending on the partnerships and bookings generated after the Expo.

For the participating hotels, event venues, destination management companies, transport operators and other service providers, such direct engagement offers an opportunity to understand international requirements, present tailored solutions and build relationships that can extend well beyond the event itself.

The programme also included a gala dinner at Bellevue Beach Club, Port City Colombo, providing an opportunity for international participants to experience Sri Lankan hospitality in a setting that showcased the country’s evolving urban and tourism landscape.

One of the most compelling aspects of Sri Lanka’s MICE proposition is the opportunity to combine professional engagements with a remarkably diverse range of visitor experiences.

Unlike destinations that depend predominantly on conference facilities or urban attractions, Sri Lanka can offer delegates a combination of modern hospitality, coastal resorts, ancient civilisations, wildlife, scenic hill-country landscapes and distinctive cultural traditions.

The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau facilitated a post-event familiarisation tour to the Cultural Triangle, offering hosted buyers and international media representatives an opportunity to explore some of the island nation’s most fascinating historical, cultural and natural attractions. The itinerary included the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the scenic surroundings of Habarana, an immersive cultural experience at Hiriwadunna Village, an exciting wildlife safari at Minneriya National Park, a visit to the Sigiriya Zero Plastic Impact Centre, and the remarkable Dambulla Cave Temple.

Each destination offered a distinctive experience, combining ancient history, archaeological wonders, traditional village life, wildlife conservation and religious heritage. Sigiriya impressed with its extraordinary rock-top fortress and the legacy of an ancient civilisation, while Hiriwadunna Village provided an insight into traditional rural life and local culture. The jeep safari at Minneriya offered an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s rich wildlife and natural landscapes. The visit to the Sigiriya Zero Plastic Impact Centre highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism, while the Dambulla Cave Temple provided a memorable encounter with the island’s Buddhist heritage, ancient cave art and sacred architecture.

The familiarisation tour demonstrated how effectively Sri Lanka combines its cultural treasures, natural attractions and authentic local experiences into a diverse tourism product. For international MICE planners and travel operators, such experiences are particularly valuable in developing incentive programmes, pre- and post-conference excursions, and extended-stay itineraries that allow business visitors to discover the country beyond its conference venues.

A delegate arriving for a three-day business event, for example, may be encouraged to extend the visit for a cultural tour, a wildlife experience or a journey into the hill country. This creates additional business for hotels, restaurants, guides, transport providers and local communities.

This integration of business events with leisure experiences is one of the strongest foundations for Sri Lanka’s MICE ambitions.

The Expo also highlighted the importance of a dedicated national organisation in developing and marketing a specialised tourism segment.

Operating under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau is responsible for promoting and developing the country’s MICE industry and connecting local businesses with international opportunities.

SL MICE Expo has evolved since its inception in 2021, reflecting the continuing need for direct engagement between destinations and the international buyers who influence decisions about where meetings, incentives and conferences are held.

The sixth edition brought this approach into focus by assembling buyers from 26 countries and giving Sri Lankan businesses a platform to present their capabilities in a competitive international environment.

The initiative sends a clear message: winning international events requires sustained marketing, industry coordination, professional standards and close relationships with decision-makers. Destination promotion must be supported by the ability to deliver the services, facilities and experiences promised to buyers.
