LAHORE: LAHORE: A significant step toward modernising rail transport in Punjab has been taken with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the provincial government and Pakistan Railways. The agreement, signed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, aims to enhance railway services and strengthen connectivity across the province.

A key highlight of the initiative is the introduction of Pakistan’s first high-speed train service between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The train is expected to cover the 280-kilometre distance in nearly two and a half hours, offering passengers a faster and more efficient travel option.

According to officials, the project also includes the launch of modern train operations on eight regional routes, spanning 20 districts and covering approximately 1,415 kilometres. The Punjab government will supply advanced Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains, new locomotives, and upgraded passenger coaches. Planned routes include Shahdara–Narowal, Narowal–Sialkot, Raiwind–Kasur–Pakpattan–Lodhran, Sheikhupura–Jaranwala–Shorkot, Lala Musa–Malakwal–Sargodha, Faisalabad–Chak Jhumra–Shaheenabad, and Kot Addu–Dera Ghazi Khan–Kashmore.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hanif Abbasi praised the chief minister’s vision, stating that the partnership would play a vital role in revitalising Pakistan Railways and improving travel for millions. He noted that nearly 90 million people would benefit from enhanced rail connectivity across nine routes. He also outlined plans for infrastructure upgrades, including the modernisation of Lahore Railway Station, installation of automated safety systems, and development of international-standard parking facilities.

Environmental improvements are also part of the initiative, with over 400,000 trees being planted along railway tracks and green belts planned between Shahdara and Raiwind. The chief minister reaffirmed her commitment to delivering modern, high-quality transport services to the people of Punjab.
