KARACHI: The Culture and Tourism Department, Government of Sindh, has redefined travel with the launch of the much-anticipated Thar Desert Train Safari on February 8, 2025. This extraordinary initiative offers an immersive journey through the cultural and scenic wonders of Sindh, providing travelers with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The grand inauguration of the Thar Desert Train Safari was held at Karachi Cantonment Station, where a vibrant celebration set the tone for this unique adventure. Sindh Minister for Culture and Tourism Syed Zulfiqar Ali, Ahmed Shah, President Karachi Arts Council, Secretary of Culture Khair Mohammad Kalwar, and Mr Feyaz Ali Shah, Managing Director of the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation (STDC), graced the occasion. Hundreds of jubilant attendees, including cultural enthusiasts and tourists, witnessed a dazzling display of Sindhi folk music and traditional dances, transforming the station into a scene of festivity.

A Route Through Time and Beauty

The safari train embarked on a spectacular journey, winding through the historical and picturesque landscapes of Sindh. From the bustling metropolis of Karachi to the golden dunes of Tharparkar, travelers were treated to an ever-changing canvas of culture and nature. As the train made its way from Hyderabad to Mirpurkhas, and from Mirpurkhas to Chhor, each stop was marked by overwhelming local hospitality.

At Chhor, a town in the Umerkot district, the passengers were met with a grand traditional welcome. The Umerkot Deputy Commissioner, SSP, senior government officials, and army officers joined the locals in greeting the travelers with warmth and enthusiasm. The station came alive with Sindhi folk music, enthusiastic dances, and cheerful children dressed in colorful cultural attire, presenting the visitors with flower bouquets as a token of hospitality.

As night fell, the tourists were escorted to the Parchi Ji Veri Resort, a newly developed eco-tourism retreat nestled in the serene desert landscape. The evening was an enchanting affair, filled with delicious traditional Sindhi cuisine, soulful music, and a mesmerizing bonfire under the vast, starlit sky. Renowned Sindhi singers performed, making the night an unforgettable experience of music, heritage, and camaraderie.

The Magical Ride to Khokhrapar and Beyond

Excitement soared the next morning as the travelers resumed their journey towards Khokhrapar, departing at 7:30 AM. As the train traversed the boundless golden sands of the Thar Desert, the mesmerizing landscapes unfolded like a dream. The vast stretches of dunes, dotted with acacia trees and wandering peacocks, painted a breathtaking picture of nature’s raw beauty.

Upon reaching Khokhrapar, the travelers were welcomed with warmth and traditional hospitality. The Pakistan Rangers, led by a senior colonel, greeted the visitors and provided a fascinating briefing about the historical significance of the Pakistan-India border. The journey then extended to Zero Point, the historic last railway station of Pakistan, marking the ultimate destination of the train safari.

Standing at this symbolic frontier, tourists marveled at the history embedded in the land—where culture, geography, and geopolitics converge. The moment was not just a sightseeing experience but a journey into the past and future of the region.

A Vision for the Future of Sindh Tourism

Speaking at the event, Sindh’s Secretary of Culture, Khair Mohammad Kalwar, expressed his delight at the successful launch and the overwhelming response from the local community. He emphasized the importance of such projects in promoting tourism and preserving Sindh’s rich cultural heritage.

Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah underscored the government’s commitment to making Sindh a vibrant tourism destination, stating:

“Under the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, we are unlocking Sindh’s tourism potential through innovative projects like this. The Thar Desert Train Safari will not only boost tourism but also bring national and international attention to our rich culture and natural beauty.”

To further promote Sindh’s tourism and adventure landscape, he announced plans for an upcoming jeep rally in Tharparkar and the two-day Lahooti Festival in Larkana, commencing on February 15 in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism.

A heartfelt salute to Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah, Managing Director of STDC, whose visionary leadership and unwavering dedication brought the ‘Thar Desert Train Safari’ to life. What once seemed an ambitious dream, fraught with challenges, has now materialized into one of Sindh’s finest tourism experiences—all thanks to his relentless perseverance and commitment.

From the very inception of the journey, the dynamic and proactive Mr. Feyaz was at the helm, ensuring every traveler’s comfort and well-being. His meticulous attention to detail was evident in every aspect—be it overseeing hospitality, maintaining precise schedules, or engaging with the media whenever time permitted. His hands-on approach, from warmly welcoming travelers at departure to personally bidding them farewell at the journey’s end, exemplifies true leadership.

A true torchbearer of Sindh’s tourism, Mr. Feyaz Ali Shah, along with his dedicated team, deserves the highest commendation for the resounding success of the inaugural ‘Thar Desert Train Safari.’ His passion and determination have set a remarkable precedent for tourism in the region.

A Journey That Leaves a Mark

The inaugural journey of the Thar Desert Train Safari carried over 100 enthusiastic travelers, leaving them with unforgettable memories of Sindh’s vibrant culture, mesmerizing landscapes, and heartfelt hospitality. More than just a train ride, this safari is a celebration of Sindh’s soul, inviting the world to discover its hidden treasures and timeless charm.

With its grand success, the Thar Desert Train Safari promises to become a hallmark of sustainable and cultural tourism in Pakistan, ensuring that the magic of Sindh continues to inspire generations to come.
