BRUSSELS: The current ban on electronic items in cabin baggage which affects flights to the US from eight countries won’t be extended to include services operating from Europe. The decision follows a four-hour meeting between EU and US officials to discuss threats to aviation security which took place in Brussels on May 17. Last year, 30 million people flew to the US from Europe. According to the airports association ACI Europe, there are 3,257 flights a week scheduled to fly to the US from airports in 28 European Union countries this summer. The trade association of the world’s airlines, International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on the European Commission and the US government to adopt additional airport safety measures rather than expand the current, controversial ban on personal electronic devices (PEDs) in the cabin of flights from Middle Eastern and North African countries.
