Theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”
Today, as we join the global community in celebrating World Tourism Day 2025, we embrace the theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”. This year’s theme invites us to reflect deeply on how tourism as one of the world’s largest economic sectors can be a force for positive change, especially in the face of climate change and growing socio-economic disparities.
Pakistan, a land of breath-taking natural beauty, rich heritage, and warm hospitality, stands at a unique crossroads. From the majestic peaks of the Karakoram and Himalayas to the serene coastlines of Sindh and Balochistan, from the cultural wealth of Mohenjo-Daro Mehargrah Harrapa and Taxila to the modern day vibrant cities, our country holds immense potential to become a hub for sustainable tourism. Yet, we must also acknowledge the challenges that hinder our progress. Pakistan, the home to holy places of Jain, Hindu and Sikh holy places besides Islamic and Sufi Shrines.
In recent years, Pakistan has made notable strides in tourism development. Domestic and international interest of visitors has grown significantly, particularly in adventure, religious, and cultural tourism. However, issues such as inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, inconsistent policy implementation, and lack of community involvement continue to pose significant barriers.
Climate change, in particular, is a growing threat. Glacial melt, water scarcity, and extreme weather events are not only threatening our ecosystems but also our cultural and historical sites. If tourism is to be a vehicle for sustainable transformation, then environmental protection must be at its heart. The development of climate-resilient infrastructure, promotion of low-impact tourism practices, and protection of biodiversity must become our national priorities. Extremism and intolerance blended into our social fabric, induced in 80s pose a major threat to domestic, regional and global tourism in Pakistan.
This moment calls for strategic vision and collective commitment. By investing in sustainable tourism, we have the opportunity to stimulate local economies, create inclusive jobs, and empower youth and women, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas. Tourism, when managed responsibly, can foster cross-cultural understanding, promote peace, and preserve our natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.
The government of Pakistan is committed to aligning tourism development with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and is actively working on sustainable tourism policies. Adoption green certification for tourism businesses, and integration of our strategies to support community-based and eco-friendly tourism are important goals. But government alone cannot achieve this vision. The private sector, civil society, local communities, and especially our youth should become active stakeholders in transforming Pakistan into a hub of sustainable tourism.
Together, let us work toward a future where tourism in Pakistan uplifts lives, protects the planet, and showcases the very best of Pakistan as world class tourist destination.
