Sports is a uniting factor. Cricket has done wonders in India and Pakistan relations, so maybe basketball can do the same for North and South Korea. President Trump opened the doors for friendly relations through basketball, and it is no secret that North Korea leader Kim Jong-un loves basketball.
Trump and Kim have a common friend in the sport of basketball. US sports star Dennis Rodman, retired professional basketball player, traveled to Singapore to shake hands with both leaders during the recent historic summit.
North and South Korea agreed to hold friendly basketball games in Pyongyang on July 4 and in Seoul this fall, and they want to form a joint team to participate in the 2018 Asian Games coming up in August at Palembang in Indonesia.
During the opening and closing ceremonies of the Asian Games, the 2 teams will both march as one unified team under a unified flag that will display the Korean peninsula and the traditional Arirang song as their anthem under the name of Korea using the abbreviation of “COR.” This will be the 11th time that a unified Korean team will march together at an international multi-sport event.
This week a South Korean delegation visited the Kaesong Industrial Complex to work on establishing a cross-border liaison office, and prior to that, an agreement on cross-border sports took place at Peace House in Panmunjom, as reported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The Red Cross will hold talks to discuss the reunion of families that were separated by the Korean War close to 70 years ago.
