KARACHI: As the world prepares to celebrate World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, the theme “Tourism and Peace” resonates more than ever, calling for greater understanding and collaboration across cultures.

In Karachi, renowned bicycle groups partnered with the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation for a week-long celebration, culminating in an inspiring exploration ride from Clifton to the historic Choukhandi Graveyard.

A Vibrant Start On a crisp morning, cyclists gathered at Clifton, a lively coastal area known for its picturesque views and bustling atmosphere. Among them was the “Pedal for Peace” group, consisting of cycling enthusiasts, community leaders, and history buffs eager to discover the treasures of Choukhandi. With spirits high, the group set off, their colorful jerseys creating a vibrant spectacle against the backdrop of Karachi’s lively streets.

The sound of tires rolling and laughter filled the air as they navigated through busy markets, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. The Journey to Choukhandi Leaving the urban hustle behind, the cyclists found themselves on quieter roads, surrounded by lush greenery. The transition from the city to the countryside brought a sense of tranquility, with the rhythmic sound of pedaling providing a calming backdrop.

After an invigorating hour of cycling, the group arrived at the Choukhandi Graveyard. This archaeological site is famed for its intricately carved tombs, which date back to the 15th century. As they dismounted, a palpable sense of reverence filled the air. The graveyard’s unique sandstone tombs, adorned with detailed carvings and motifs, told stories of the region’s artistic heritage. Gathering around, members were provided an introduction to the site’s significance.

“Choukhandi is more than a burial ground; it represents our cultural legacy,” it was explained. The cyclists listened intently as they explored the tombs, marveling at the craftsmanship that had survived centuries.

A Lasting Impact: The collaboration between the bicycle groups and the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation exemplifies the power of community engagement and cultural exploration. As World Tourism Day approaches, the ride from Clifton to Choukhandi serves as a reminder that every journey can contribute to understanding and peace. Through this initiative, participants not only explored a significant archaeological site but also embraced their roles as stewards of cultural heritage. The bonds formed during this ride will extend beyond the event, inspiring a commitment to preserve history and promote peace within and beyond their communities.
