BRASILIA: Brazil’s Senate approved an open skies agreement with the United States, a measure that should lead to more flights between the two countries and increased competition in their airline industries. The bill passed in a symbolic vote and will become law following a few procedural steps. HONG KONG: Kazakhstan flag carrier Air Astana has signed a codeshare agreement with Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific. In a statement released by the Kazakh airline, the agreement will enhance travel options for Cathay Pacific customers travelling to and from Kazakhstan and for Air Astana customers travelling to and from destinations in Asia and Australia via the airlines’ hubs in Hong Kong and Almaty respectively. KARACHI: In order to improve revenue position, the liquidity starved Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) President and CEO Musharraf Rasool Cyan has withdrawn his discretionary powers to waive excess baggage authority for all purposes. A spokesperson for the national airline said that the CEO has ordered strict monitoring of excess baggage booking and no relaxation will be granted in any case. Recently, PIA also withdrew substantial discounts of up to 40% meant for senior citizens, students and differently-abled passengers on air fares in a bid to streamline its revenues.
